I've been planning a solo trip across the coast and I'm really interested in trying out hitchhiking to save money and meet locals. I've heard mixed things about it, so I want to make sure I'm doing it as safely as possible. What are the essential steps for picking a good spot and signaling drivers effectively? Also, are there any specific safety precautions or gear I should absolutely have with me before heading out? Any advice from experienced travelers would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly, the golden rule is to always trust your gut. If a car stops and you get a weird vibe, just smile, say no thanks, and keep walking.

I second that! Intuition is your best friend when you're on the road alone.

For signaling, make sure you have a clear sign with the name of the next major city. People are more likely to stop if they know you aren't just looking for a ride to the next gas station.

That's good advice, but don't make the sign too big. Keep it legible and simple.

Always carry a power bank. Your phone dying in the middle of nowhere is not an option.

Exactly! And keep a physical map as a backup. GPS isn't always reliable in remote areas.

Dress neatly. It sounds shallow, but drivers are way more likely to pick up someone who looks like a traveler rather than someone who looks like they're loitering.

I've hitched across Europe and I totally agree with the 'look tidy' tip. It makes a huge difference in wait times.

Never get into a car if the driver is drinking or seems aggressive. It's not worth the risk.

Also, share your live location with a friend or family member whenever you get into a new vehicle.

Try to stick to gas stations or highway on-ramps. It's much easier to talk to people while they're fueling up than trying to flag them down on the shoulder.

I've had the best luck at truck stops. Truckers are usually on long hauls and are pretty decent company.

Bring a high-visibility vest. If you're stuck out there after dark, you need to be seen by traffic.

And carry a headlamp! Trying to hold a flashlight while holding a sign is a nightmare.

Have you considered getting a pepper spray or a personal alarm? Just for peace of mind.

Be careful with pepper spray, check the local laws for each state or country you pass through. You don't want to get in trouble with the police.

Stay hydrated and keep some snacks on you. Sometimes you might be waiting for hours in the sun.

It's all about patience. If you look frustrated or angry, people won't want to stop.
