Hey everyone! I'm planning a longer trip to Europe for about 3-4 weeks next spring and I'm on a pretty tight budget. I've already done the typical Western European cities, so I'm really keen to explore places that offer more bang for your buck in terms of accommodation, food, and activities. I'm looking for recommendations for countries or even specific regions that are known for being affordable but still offer a rich cultural experience, beautiful scenery, or interesting history. I'm open to anything from Eastern Europe to the Balkans or even Southern Europe if there are hidden gems. Any personal experiences or tips on how to save money while traveling in those areas would be super helpful!

Hands down, the Balkans! Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and North Macedonia are incredibly cheap, rich in history, and have stunning natural beauty. You'll get so much for your money there.

I spent a month in Poland last spring and absolutely loved it. Krakow is beautiful but don't skip cities like Gdansk or Wroclaw. Food is delicious and super affordable, especially if you eat at milk bars (bar mleczny).

Romania is fantastic! Transylvania offers castles, medieval towns, and gorgeous mountains, and prices are very low compared to Western Europe. Plus, the people are incredibly welcoming.

Portugal outside of Lisbon and Porto is still quite budget-friendly, especially the central region or the Alentejo. You get amazing food, wine, and history without the huge crowds or prices.

Totally agree with the Balkans suggestion! If you're looking for hidden gems, consider Serbia. Belgrade is a vibrant city, and the countryside is beautiful and untouched. Very affordable, too.

Honestly, for 3-4 weeks, I'd pick 2-3 countries in a close region to minimize travel costs. Eastern Europe like Hungary and Slovakia could be a great combo, easy to get between them by train or bus.

Don't overlook Bulgaria! Sofia is cool, Plovdiv is ancient and charming, and the Black Sea coast offers cheap alternatives to the Mediterranean. Plus, the Rila Monastery is a must-see.

My top tip for saving money anywhere in Europe is to use public transport extensively and cook some of your own meals if you're staying in places with kitchens (hostels, Airbnbs). Local markets are your friend!

Regarding Poland, I found that even Prague in the Czech Republic can be surprisingly affordable once you get outside the absolute tourist traps. But overall, Poland offers better value IMO.

Albania is a game-changer. The Albanian Riviera is just as beautiful as Croatia but a fraction of the price. Plus, the ancient ruins and mountain landscapes are incredible. Definitely put it on your list.

Greece mainland is often forgotten for its islands, but places like Thessaloniki, Meteora, and the Peloponnese offer incredible history and scenery for much less. Renting a car can be cheap if you split costs.

For a rich cultural experience on a budget, you can't beat Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sarajevo's history is profound, and Mostar is stunning. Food is amazing and very cheap.

Someone mentioned Portugal, and I second that! Just avoid the Algarve in peak season. The north, like Porto and the Douro Valley, is still great value and absolutely stunning for scenery and wine.

Have you considered Slovakia? Bratislava is a lovely capital, but the High Tatras mountains are breathtaking and offer incredible hiking for very little cost. It's often cheaper than its neighbours.
