I'm planning a solo trip through Europe next summer and trying to figure out my accommodation strategy. I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I've been looking at both hostels and very cheap hotels. I've heard great things about the social aspect of hostels and how easy it is to meet people, which appeals to me as a solo traveler. However, the idea of a private room and bathroom in a budget hotel also sounds really appealing for privacy and comfort after a long day of exploring. I'm torn between the two options and would love to hear about others' experiences. What factors should I consider most when making this decision, especially regarding safety, cleanliness, and overall value for money?

Honestly, it depends on your personality. If you're an introvert who needs a quiet space to recharge, go for the budget hotel. If you want to make friends, a hostel is a no-brainer.

I agree with the previous comment. As someone who has done both, I'd suggest booking a hostel with private room options. You get the social vibe in the common areas but can retreat to your own space when you're tired.

Safety-wise, most hostels are very secure these days with lockers and key-card access. Just read the reviews on Hostelworld before booking to see what others say about the neighborhood.

Don't underestimate the cost of eating out! Hostels usually have kitchens, which saved me a fortune during my trip through Central Europe.

I tried a budget hotel once and it felt so lonely. I much prefer the hostel atmosphere where you can just sit in the lounge and someone will inevitably strike up a conversation.

Check out 'pod' style hostels! They offer a nice middle ground between a dorm bed and a private room, usually with a privacy curtain and your own reading light.

For me, the cleanliness of a hostel is the biggest deal-breaker. I've stayed in some that were spotless and others that were questionable. Always check the recent photos in the reviews.

You could also try doing a mix of both! Stay in a hostel for a few days to meet people, then book a budget hotel for a night or two just to get a good night's sleep in total silence.

It really comes down to whether you value privacy more than the social aspect. Personally, I'm a light sleeper, so I always choose the hotel.

Europe is super solo-traveler friendly. Don't stress too much about the decision; you'll have a blast either way!
