I'm planning my first solo trip across Europe this summer and I'm seriously considering using Couchsurfing to save on costs and meet locals. I've read a lot of mixed reviews online, ranging from amazing life-changing experiences to a few horror stories about creepy hosts. Does anyone have advice on how to vet potential hosts effectively before sending a request? I really want to focus on cultural exchange, but I'm a bit nervous about safety as a solo traveler.

Honestly, the key is the references. If they don't have at least 10-20 positive reviews from different people, just skip them.

Totally agree with the references point. Also, look for hosts who have verified profiles. It adds a layer of trust.

I've been surfing for years! Just trust your gut. If a host's profile feels weird or overly sexualized, don't even bother.

My advice is to have a backup plan. Always keep enough money for a hostel just in case the vibe is off when you arrive.

Good point about the backup plan. I once had a host cancel on me last minute in Prague, so having a hostel booked as a safety net saved my trip.

Don't just look for a free bed. Couchsurfing is about community. If you don't plan on hanging out with your host, just book a hostel.

Exactly! If you just want a cheap room, use Airbnb or hostels. Don't be that guest who treats people like a hotel.

I'm a female solo traveler and I've had great luck by only requesting hosts who have female references. It makes me feel much safer.

That's a smart strategy. I usually do the same, and it’s never failed me yet.

Europe is pretty safe, but keep your passport and valuables on you at all times. Don't leave stuff out in a stranger's house.

Make sure your host has a clear description of where you'll be sleeping. Is it a couch in the living room or a private guest room? You need to know.

I second this. I once ended up in a shared bed situation that wasn't clear in the profile. Always clarify the sleeping arrangements beforehand!

It's all about communication. Send a personalized message instead of a copy-paste request. Hosts appreciate the effort.

Couchsurfing isn't as popular as it used to be. You might have better luck with some of the newer apps like Trustroots or BeWelcome.

I've heard about those apps, but are they as active as Couchsurfing in major European cities?

Just be prepared for some hosts to be busy. They aren't your tour guides, so don't expect them to spend every minute with you.

Have a blast! My first Couchsurfing experience in Italy was the highlight of my life. Just stay smart and you'll be fine.
