Thinking of visiting Thailand in July - is the rainy season that bad?

I'm looking at booking a trip to Thailand this summer, specifically around July or August, but I'm a bit worried about the monsoon season. I've heard mixed things about whether it's worth going during this time or if I'll just be stuck inside the whole time. Is it usually just short bursts of rain, or does it pour for days on end? I'm mainly interested in Bangkok and maybe some islands, so I'd love to hear from anyone who has traveled there during the summer months. Are the lower prices and fewer crowds worth the weather risk?

I went last July and it was totally fine. It usually rains for like an hour in the afternoon and then it's sunny again. Just brings a bit of relief from the heat honestly.

It really depends on which side of the coast you're on. In July, you should head to the Gulf side (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) rather than the Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi) where the sea can be quite rough.

Spot on advice about the Gulf islands. I was in Samui last August and we only had two rainy days out of ten. The weather was gorgeous otherwise.

The humidity is the real killer, not the rain. Be prepared to sweat through three shirts a day!

I'm a budget traveler so the low season is the only time I go. You can get 5-star hotels for 3-star prices. Totally worth the risk of a few puddles.

Which hotels did you stay at? I'm looking for some good deals for my trip in August too.

Honestly, I hated it. I was in Phuket for a week in July and it rained non-stop for four days straight. I felt like I wasted my flight money.

That's because you went to the west coast during the peak of their monsoon. Like the other guy said, you have to pick the right islands for the season.

Bangkok is fine in the rain because there are so many malls and indoor things to do. Just don't expect to rely on Grab or taxis when it pours-traffic becomes a nightmare.

Bring a lightweight poncho, not an umbrella. The wind will just break your umbrella anyway.

Is it really that much cheaper? I've seen some flights that are still pretty expensive for July.

To the OP: it's 100% worth it for the lack of crowds. Being at a major temple without 5,000 other people is a completely different experience.

Just go for it. Even a rainy day in Thailand is better than a sunny day at the office!

I've lived here for five years and July is actually one of my favorite months. The landscape is so green and lush compared to the dry season when everything looks brown and dusty.
