I'm looking to head to Albania for about ten days this summer and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options. Most people suggest Saranda and Ksamil, but I've heard they can get pretty crowded in July. Does anyone have recommendations for quieter coastal spots or maybe some mountain villages worth visiting in the north? I'm also curious about the best way to get around-is renting a car absolutely necessary or is the bus system reliable enough for tourists? Any tips on local food I shouldn't miss would be a huge bonus too!

If you want to avoid the Saranda crowds, definitely head to Himara. It's got a much more laid-back vibe and the beaches are just as stunning without the massive hotel blocks.

I 100% agree with the Himara suggestion. I stayed there for four days last year and it was the highlight of my trip. Make sure to visit Gjipe Beach nearby, but you'll need to hike down to it!

Renting a car is pretty much essential if you want to see the hidden gems. The 'furgons' (local minibuses) are an experience, but they don't really have fixed schedules and can be super stressful for a first-timer.

Theth is exactly what you're looking for in the north. It feels like stepping back in time. The drive up there is a bit scary but the mountain views are incredible.

Regarding the car rental: just be prepared for the driving style there. It's a bit 'creative' compared to the UK or US, but you get used to it after a day.

Don't skip Gjirokastër! It's a stone city and a UNESCO site. The castle at the top gives you a great view of the whole valley.

You absolutely have to try Tavë Kosi. It's a baked lamb and yogurt dish that sounds weird but tastes like heaven. Also, eat as much Byrek as you can find.

Is it easy to find vegetarian food in the mountain villages? I'm planning a similar trip.

To the person asking about veggie food: yes, plenty of fresh salads, cheeses, and vegetable byrek. You won't starve, but meat is definitely the centerpiece of most traditional meals.

I found the bus system quite charming actually! It's slow, but you meet so many locals. Just go to the bus station and shout your destination, someone will point you to the right van.

If you go north, do the ferry trip on Lake Koman. It's often cited as one of the best boat trips in the world. It's like the Norwegian fjords but much cheaper.

For a quiet coastal spot, look into Borsh. It has the longest beach on the Ionian coast and it never feels crowded because it's so massive.

Just a heads up, July is scorching hot. If you aren't a fan of 35C+ heat, stick to the mountains in the north for at least half your trip.

Albanian hospitality is next level. Don't be surprised if a local offers you Raki at 10 AM. Just say yes and enjoy!
