My partner and I are planning a trip to Europe this autumn, likely late September to mid-October, and we're starting to feel a bit overwhelmed with options. We're really hoping to experience some beautiful fall foliage, charming towns, and perhaps some cultural sights without the peak summer crowds. We're open to different regions but ideally looking for places that are still pleasant weather-wise for walking around and exploring. Think picturesque landscapes, cozy cafes, and maybe some historical sites that look even better with autumn colors. Any recommendations for specific cities, regions, or even countries that really shine during this time of year for sightseeing? We're trying to narrow down our options and would love some first-hand experiences or suggestions.

Oh, this is such a great time to travel! My partner and I did a similar trip a few years ago. I would highly recommend Tuscany in Italy. The rolling hills are absolutely stunning with the autumn colors, especially around Siena and the Chianti region. Plus, the harvest season means amazing food and wine experiences, and it's far less crowded than summer. The weather in late September/early October is usually perfect for exploring, warm enough during the day but crisp in the evenings.

For truly picturesque landscapes and charming towns, you absolutely cannot go wrong with Bavaria in Germany. Think fairytale castles like Neuschwanstein nestled among golden and red trees. The small towns along the 'Romantic Road' are delightful, and you get that cozy cafe vibe you're looking for. Plus, there's a lot of culture and history. The weather can be a bit hit or miss but often lovely for walking.

I second Bavaria! Also, consider Prague, Czech Republic. The city itself is magical, and the parks turn beautiful shades of orange and red. It's often a bit colder than Italy or southern France, but still very walkable and the crowds are definitely manageable.

If you're looking for something truly unique with incredible autumn foliage and charming towns, consider Alsace, France. Specifically, the Alsace Wine Route. Colmar, Eguisheim, Riquewihr... these villages are like something out of a storybook, and with the vineyards changing color, it's breathtaking. The food is a fantastic blend of French and German influences. Weather-wise, it's generally pleasant, though pack layers.

Regarding the weather, while Italy and France are lovely, don't rule out Scotland! The Highlands in autumn are incredibly dramatic and beautiful. You'll get stunning colors, but yes, you might need to embrace a bit more 'atmospheric' weather (read: rain). But the cozy pubs and roaring fires make up for it!

I agree with the Bavaria suggestions, it's fantastic for autumn. If you want to combine it with some truly spectacular mountain scenery, look into the Austrian Alps, perhaps around Innsbruck or Salzburg. The Larch trees turn brilliant gold, and there are some amazing hiking trails that are still accessible before the snow really hits.

That's a tough one because so many places are beautiful! But if you really want to lean into the 'cozy cafe' and historical sites vibe, I'd say Bruges, Belgium. It's incredibly charming, and the canals with the autumn leaves are just postcard perfect. It can be a bit chilly, but it just adds to the atmosphere.

I'm currently planning a similar trip! I'm leaning towards Portugal (Porto and Lisbon) for late September because the weather is still quite mild and pleasant for walking, and while you won't get dramatic fall foliage everywhere, the cities themselves are so vibrant and historic. Or, for foliage, parts of Romania like Transylvania can be surprisingly beautiful and offer a very unique cultural experience.
