My partner and I are trying to decide where to book our two-week summer vacation for this year. We love the idea of the Mediterranean in general, but we are torn between sticking to the Adriatic side, like Croatia or Montenegro, or heading further west toward Spain or the French Riviera. We are looking for a mix of good food, clear swimming water, and some historical sightseeing without it being completely overrun by massive crowds. Has anyone visited both regions recently and noticed a significant difference in terms of price, accessibility, or overall vibe? Any insights on which might be better for a relaxing, balanced trip would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly, the Adriatic is stunning but it's getting incredibly expensive and crowded in July and August. If you want to avoid the worst of the masses, try the northern part of Montenegro or the islands in Croatia that aren't Hvar or Brač.

I second that, definitely avoid Dubrovnik in peak season. It's beautiful but you can barely move on the main street.

If you want a mix of history and swimming, have you considered Sicily? It’s arguably better value than the French Riviera and feels less 'touristy' in a commercial sense.

I’ve done both recently. The French Riviera is great for luxury vibes, but it's pricey. Croatia feels more rugged and the water quality is superior in my opinion.

I agree with the user above about the water quality. The Adriatic is crystal clear compared to some parts of the Mediterranean further west.

Spain is fantastic for the food scene, but you have to go a bit inland or to smaller coastal towns to get away from the massive crowds. The Costa Brava has some hidden gems if you rent a car.

Whatever you choose, just make sure to book your accommodation early. Everything fills up by March/April these days.

Exactly, booking early is key. I tried to find something last-minute in Split last year and it was a nightmare.

If you are worried about crowds, consider Albania. It’s the new 'it' spot, very similar to the Adriatic coast but significantly cheaper and much more relaxed.

I’m not sure about Albania yet, it’s still developing infrastructure-wise. Stick to Croatia or Spain for a more 'balanced' and reliable experience.
