I'm planning my first solo backpacking trip through Southeast Asia next month and I'm getting a bit nervous about all the stories I hear regarding tourist scams. I've read about the classic 'broken meter' taxi tricks and the fake gem store scams, but I'm worried about what else I might encounter. Does anyone have any practical advice on how to spot these situations before they escalate? Also, are there any specific apps or local customs I should be aware of to stay under the radar and avoid being targeted?

The golden rule is to always insist on using the Grab app for transport. It sets the price upfront and eliminates the 'broken meter' headache entirely.

Exactly what @GrabUser said. Never let a driver tell you their meter is broken; just get out and find another one. It saves so much stress.

Be wary of anyone who approaches you near major attractions saying they are closed for a 'holiday' or 'ceremony'-they are almost always trying to take you to a partner shop for a scam.

That happened to me in Bangkok! I almost fell for it until I realized the temple was definitely open. Good advice.

Learn to say 'no thank you' firmly and keep walking. Don't feel like you have to be polite to strangers trying to sell you something on the street.

I agree, but try to stay polite. In many SE Asian cultures, losing your temper or 'losing face' makes the situation much worse for you.

If you are renting a scooter, always take photos of every single scratch before you leave the shop. They will try to charge you for pre-existing damage when you return it.

This is a great tip. I'd add: never give them your original passport as a deposit. Use a copy or a cash deposit instead.

Honestly, just stay aware of your surroundings and don't look like a lost tourist. Walk with purpose and keep your phone in your pocket, not in your hand.
