We are planning our first family trip to Bulgaria this summer and would love some honest reviews from those who have been. We have two kids aged 6 and 9, so we're looking for a resort that isn't too loud but still has plenty of activities like water parks or kids' clubs. Some friends suggested Albena for its calm atmosphere, while others say Sunny Beach has better amenities despite the party reputation. Has anyone stayed at a specific hotel they would recommend for a stress-free experience? We're also curious about the food quality at all-inclusive resorts versus eating out at local tavernas.

Albena is definitely the way to go if you want peace and quiet. The whole resort is closed off to traffic and the beach is super wide with shallow water, which is perfect for your 6-year-old.

I'd avoid Sunny Beach if you aren't looking for a party scene. Even the 'quiet' parts can get pretty loud at night with the music from the bars.

Actually, the northern end of Sunny Beach near Sveti Vlas is much calmer. We stayed at the Helena Sands and it was very family-oriented and high quality.

We went to the Sol Nessebar Resort last year. It has its own water park and the kids' club was actually engaging for my 8-year-old. Definitely worth checking out.

Regarding the food - we found the all-inclusive options to be okay, but nothing beats the local 'mehana' tavernas. The Shopska salad and grilled meats are incredible and so cheap.

I agree with the food comment! We usually do half-board so we're forced to go out for lunch or dinner. It's much more authentic than the buffet food.

Look into Duni Royal Resort. It's a bit isolated, but it's a self-contained village with everything you need. Very safe for kids to run around.

Is Duni far from the airport? We're worried about long transfers with the little ones.

It's about an hour from Burgas airport. Not too bad, but definitely book a private transfer rather than the shuttle bus.

For the best water parks, you really want to be near Nessebar or Ravda. The Aqua Paradise there is huge and my 9-year-old loved it.

We stayed at the HVD Miramar in Obzor. It’s right on the beach and the food quality was surprisingly good for an all-inclusive. They have a great animation team too.

Honestly, just pick a 4 or 5-star hotel in Golden Sands if you want activities. Grifid Bolero has a private aqua park and it's very well managed.

I've heard mixed things about Golden Sands being a bit 'stair-heavy' because of the hills. Is that true?

Yes, Golden Sands can be a bit of a climb if your hotel isn't right on the promenade. Albena is much flatter if you have a stroller or just don't want to hike.

Don't forget to try the local pancakes (palachinki) on the beach! They are a holiday staple for our kids.

We found the all-inclusive food in Bulgaria to be a bit repetitive after 3 days. We ended up eating out most nights anyway.

That's why we always recommend a hotel near a town center, like Sozopol. You get the resort feel but can walk into a beautiful old town for dinner.
