My partner and I are planning a hiking trip to the Romanian Carpathians this summer and we're looking for some advice on route selection. We have a good amount of experience with multi-day trekking, but we're hoping to find a loop trail that isn't overly technical while still offering those classic high-altitude views. We've heard mixed things about the crowds near Bâlea Lake, so we are open to slightly less busy alternatives if you have any suggestions. Does anyone have a favorite 3-day itinerary that includes good spots for wild camping? Any tips on water sources or weather patterns for July would also be greatly appreciated.

The Făgăraș are stunning, but definitely don't underestimate the weather in July. Even if it's hot in the valley, you can get sudden thunderstorms on the ridge.

Skip the Bâlea Lake area if you want peace. Try starting from Sâmbăta de Sus instead, the trail up to Fereastra Mare is much quieter and the views are just as good.

I second the Sâmbăta de Sus suggestion. The monastery there is a great starting point, and you can loop back via the ridge towards Podu Giurgiului.

Make sure you pack a solid rain shell. I spent three days up there last summer and it rained every single afternoon like clockwork.

Is wild camping actually allowed there? I thought you were only supposed to camp near the mountain huts (cabanas) for safety reasons.

Technically wild camping is a gray area, but most people do it as long as you're respectful and don't leave any trash. Just don't pitch your tent right next to the huts.

If you want to avoid the crowds, steer clear of the section between Bâlea and Negoiu peak. It gets really jammed with day-trippers.

I'd suggest looking into the area around Lake Avrig. It's a bit of a hike to get there, but it's a beautiful spot for a base camp for a few nights.

How experienced are you with exposure? Some parts of the main ridge have chains, and they can be nerve-wracking if you're not used to them.

The chains aren't that bad if the weather is dry, but avoid them if it's foggy or raining. It gets slippery fast.

Don't forget to check the 'Muntii Nostri' app, it's pretty reliable for checking trail markers and water sources in the Carpathians.

Water sources can be scarce on the ridge in July. Fill up whenever you see a spring, don't assume there will be another one in an hour.

Does anyone know if the shepherds' dogs are an issue this year? I've had some bad encounters in the past.

The dogs are always around, but they usually stay with the sheep. Just keep your distance and don't make sudden movements.

Honestly, the Făgăraș is a beast. If you're looking for something less technical but still epic, maybe check out the Piatra Craiului mountains nearby?
