My partner and I are planning to take our 18-month-old to the beach for the first time this summer, but we are a bit overwhelmed by the options. We want somewhere with calm waters, plenty of shade, and decent bathroom facilities nearby. We are based on the East Coast but are open to traveling a bit if it means a more stress-free experience. Has anyone found a particular beach destination that is truly toddler-friendly without being too crowded? Any tips on gear or timing would also be greatly appreciated!

Cape May in New Jersey is honestly perfect for toddlers. The beaches are wide, the water is usually pretty shallow, and there are actual public restrooms which is a huge plus.

I second Cape May, but try to avoid the peak weekends if you want to keep the stress levels down.

My best advice for an 18-month-old: go early in the morning and leave by 11:30 AM before the sun gets too intense and the crowds arrive.

Have you looked into Emerald Isle in North Carolina? It's much quieter than the Outer Banks and the water is very calm for little ones.

We took our toddler to Emerald Isle last year and totally agree, it was so much more relaxing than the bigger tourist spots.

Invest in a good pop-up sun tent. It’s a total game changer for shade and gives them a contained place to nap if they get tired.

Honestly, just go to a local lake beach if you're worried about the ocean waves. The salt water and sand can be a bit much for a first-timer.

I disagree with the lake suggestion, the sand is part of the fun! Just bring a mesh bag for the toys so the sand stays at the beach and not in your car.

St. Simons Island in Georgia is fantastic. Very family-oriented, lots of shade under the trees, and the tide pools are great for toddlers to explore.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good toddler-safe sunscreen? My little one has really sensitive skin.

Look for mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide, they are usually much gentler for that age range.
