My partner and I are planning a trip to Italy this August, but we are on a pretty tight budget. We would love to find some beautiful coastal spots that aren't as expensive as the Amalfi Coast or Capri. We are considering regions like Puglia or even Calabria, but we aren't sure which specific towns offer the best value for money. Does anyone have recommendations for places with nice beaches that won't break the bank on accommodation and food? We are perfectly happy with smaller, local spots rather than major tourist hubs.

If you're looking at Puglia, definitely check out the Gargano Peninsula. Towns like Vieste or Peschici are much more affordable than the Salento area further south, and the coastline is stunning.

I second the Gargano suggestion! We went to Peschici last year and the seafood was so much cheaper than what you'd find in the major cities.

Just a heads up, August is the most expensive month in Italy because of the Ferragosto holidays. If you can push it to early September, you'll save a fortune.

Calabria is a great choice for a budget. Check out Tropea or even Scilla. The beaches are crystal clear and it's much more 'local' than the northern coasts.

I'd actually avoid Tropea in August if you're on a tight budget. It's become quite a hotspot lately and prices spike. Maybe try further south near Reggio Calabria instead?

Have you considered the Abruzzo region? Places like Vasto have beautiful 'Trabocchi' coastlines and the prices for accommodation are very reasonable compared to the west coast.

That's a good point about Abruzzo. It's often overlooked by international tourists but the food is incredible and very cheap.

Look into the Cilento area south of Salerno. It's like the Amalfi Coast's quieter, cheaper cousin. Towns like Castellabate or Palinuro are lovely and very authentic.

Sicily can also be very cheap if you stay away from Taormina. The area around Trapani or San Vito Lo Capo is gorgeous and much better value for money.

Everything is expensive in August, honestly. Be prepared for crowds no matter where you go.

My best tip for saving money is to look for an Agriturismo slightly inland. You get amazing local food and you're usually only a 15-minute drive from the beach, but for half the price of a seaside hotel.
