I'm planning my first real ski trip this winter and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the gear requirements. My friends keep telling me to buy my own boots first, but I'm worried about dropping a lot of money before knowing if I'll stick with the sport. Should I look for second-hand equipment or just stick to rentals for the first few seasons? I'd appreciate any advice on what is essential to own versus what I can get away with borrowing or renting at the resort.

Honestly, for your first trip, just rent everything. Don't invest in hard goods until you've gone at least 3-4 times and know you actually enjoy the cold and the physical demand.

I second that. Renting at the resort is convenient, and you can swap out gear if it doesn't fit right. It's not worth the hassle of hauling your own stuff yet.

Counterpoint: Buy your own boots. If your boots are uncomfortable, your entire trip will be miserable. Rental boots are often packed out and gross.

Totally agree with the boots recommendation. I rented for two seasons and suffered through blisters every single time. Buying properly fitted boots changed the game for me.

What about clothing? Should I buy that or is it rentable?

Definitely buy your own base layers, socks, and a decent jacket/pants. Resorts usually don't rent clothing, and if they do, it's usually overpriced and not very warm.

Check out local thrift stores or Facebook Marketplace for ski pants and jackets. You don't need top-tier brand new gear to stay warm.

Don't forget a helmet! You can rent them, but it's much better to have your own so you know it fits your head correctly and hasn't been dropped a million times.

I'd stick to rentals for the skis themselves for at least a few years. Technology changes, and you'll want to try different sizes as you improve.

I bought second-hand skis for my second year and it was a mistake. They were outdated and harder to learn on than the modern rentals. Stick to demo rentals for now.

It really depends on your budget. If you have the cash, sure, buy. If you're on a budget, renting is the only way to go.

Whatever you do, buy good socks. Seriously, don't skimp on the ski socks. Cold feet will ruin your day faster than anything else.

If you are worried about the cost, look for 'end of season' sales in March or April. You can get brand new gear for like 50% off.

Great tip! I got my goggles and helmet for a steal during the spring clearance sales last year.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good beginner boot brand? I'm overwhelmed by the choices.

Go to a local shop and get a boot fitting. Don't buy boots online as a beginner-you really need a professional to look at your foot shape.

Just go and have fun! Don't overthink the gear too much. The most important thing is getting out there and learning the basics.
