My partner and I are planning a week-long trip to Cyprus in late September, but we're struggling to decide which area to stay in. We aren't really into the heavy clubbing scene, so we're worried Ayia Napa might be too loud, though the beaches look incredible. On the other hand, Paphos seems to have more history and a chill vibe, but we've heard the beaches are a bit rocky. Does anyone have a recommendation for a resort that offers a good mix of nice sandy beaches and decent restaurants without being a party central? We're also considering Protaras as a middle ground.

Protaras is definitely the middle ground you are looking for. It has the same incredible white sand and turquoise water as Ayia Napa but the atmosphere is much more geared towards couples and families rather than the clubbing crowd.

I've been to both and Paphos wins for me every time. Yes, the beaches are rockier, but Coral Bay is a great sandy option nearby. The sunsets in Paphos are also way better than on the east coast.

I agree with the comment about Protaras. Fig Tree Bay is stunning, and if you go in late September, the 'party' vibe in the region has died down significantly anyway.

Don't rule out Ayia Napa entirely just because of the clubs. If you stay near Makronissos Beach or Nissi (further away from the center), it's actually very peaceful and the beaches are the best on the island.

We stayed at the Elysium in Paphos last year and it was incredible. It has its own private cove, so you don't really have to worry about the rocky public beaches.

Is it easy to get from Paphos to the Blue Lagoon? We are thinking of visiting in October.

To the person asking about the Blue Lagoon: Yes, you can take a boat trip from Latchi, which is about a 45-minute drive from Paphos. It's a must-do!

Late September is the perfect time. The water is still like a bathtub but the humidity has dropped.

Honestly, if you want history, Paphos is the clear winner. The Tombs of the Kings and the mosaics are world-class. You won't find that kind of culture in Protaras.

I found the restaurants in Paphos to be much more authentic. A lot of the places in Napa felt like tourist traps with 'English Breakfast' signs everywhere.

That's a bit unfair, there are some amazing traditional tavernas in the old part of Ayia Napa if you actually bother to look for them!

If you decide on the east coast, check out the Sunrise Pearl in Protaras. It's right on the beach, very high end, and definitely not a party hotel.

Why not split your week? 3 nights in Paphos for the history and 4 nights in Protaras for the beach. The island isn't that big, it's about a 2-hour drive.

I second the idea of splitting the trip. Rent a car and you can see the Troodos mountains on the way across too.

Just a heads up, Nissi Beach is still very loud in September. If you want the white sand without the DJ, go to Konnos Bay near Protaras.

Paphos all the way for a first trip. It feels more like a real town where people actually live, whereas Napa feels like a purpose-built resort.

Whatever you choose, make sure you book a Meze dinner at a local village taverna. That's the real Cyprus experience!
