I've always wanted to visit the Maldives, but I'm worried about the high costs associated with private island resorts. I've heard that staying on local islands like Maafushi or Gulhi can be much cheaper, but I'm not sure how to navigate the ferry system or find affordable dining. Does anyone have experience with guesthouses instead of overwater villas? I'm also curious if it's better to book excursions locally or in advance. Any advice on keeping the total cost under $1500 for a week would be greatly appreciated!

Maafushi is definitely the best starting point for a budget trip. I stayed there for 5 days last year and it was surprisingly affordable compared to the resorts.

Check the MTCC ferry schedule online, but be warned: they don't run every day and are often cancelled due to weather. Always have a backup budget for a speedboat ($25-30) just in case.

I'd actually recommend Gulhi over Maafushi if you want a better beach. Maafushi is getting a bit crowded and 'touristy' these days, whereas Gulhi feels more authentic.

Is that $1500 including flights? If so, that's going to be very tight depending on where you are flying from. If it's just for on-the-ground costs, you'll live like a king!

Definitely book excursions locally. Just walk down to the main beach area in the evening, and you'll see plenty of boards with prices for the next day. You can often negotiate if you are a group.

I agree with the local booking tip. I saved about $40 per person on a manta ray snorkel just by asking around the harbor instead of booking through my guesthouse's front desk.

Don't forget that local islands are Islamic, so no alcohol is available. If you really want a drink, you usually have to take a 'safari boat' offshore or a day pass to a resort.

Following this thread! I'm planning a similar solo trip for November and was worried about the same things.

If you eat at the local cafes (called 'hotas') instead of the fancy tourist restaurants on the beach, you can get a solid meal for $5-10. Look for 'Mas Huni' for breakfast-it's delicious and cheap.

Regarding the $1500 budget mentioned above, I managed a week on $800 excluding flights by staying in a simple guesthouse and doing only two big excursions. It is very doable.

Guesthouses are actually amazing. They often feel more personal than the big resorts. The staff usually go out of their way to help you find the best local spots.

Does the public ferry still leave from the Villingili terminal in Male? I heard some routes were moved to the Hulhumale side recently.

Make sure you bring crisp, new US Dollar bills. Many places won't accept older notes or ones with even tiny tears. Also, ATMs can be scarce on the smaller islands.

Just go for it! The water is the same shade of turquoise whether you pay $100 or $1000 a night. You won't regret visiting the local islands.
