My partner and I are really keen on escaping the cold this winter and spending some time by the sea. We're looking for recommendations for warm, sunny destinations where we can relax on a beach, maybe do some light water activities, and just generally unwind. We're open to different budgets, but ideally something that offers good value. We'd prefer somewhere that isn't overly crowded but still has a nice atmosphere and good food options. We're thinking sometime between December and February. Any hidden gems or popular spots that you've personally enjoyed for a winter sun holiday?

Oh, this is my favorite topic! We did Mexico (specifically Riviera Maya) last year in January and it was absolutely stunning. Warm, beautiful beaches, amazing food, and plenty of options for light water activities like snorkeling in cenotes. Definitely consider it!

For good value and guaranteed sun in winter, the Canary Islands are hard to beat. Fuerteventura has incredible beaches and isn't as crazy busy as Tenerife or Gran Canaria. Perfect for unwinding without breaking the bank.

Following this! What's your rough budget? That really helps narrow it down. We went to Barbados once and while gorgeous, it wasn't exactly 'good value' for us, so knowing your flexibility helps a lot.

My vote is for St. Lucia! It's absolutely gorgeous, very romantic for a couple, and has stunning beaches. You can do snorkeling, boat trips, and hike the Pitons if you're feeling adventurous. Food is fantastic. It's not usually overly crowded, especially if you avoid peak resort areas. A bit pricier than some, but worth it for the experience.

If you're willing to fly a bit further, Thailand (Krabi or Koh Lanta) or even the Maldives are just incredible. December-February is prime season. The Maldives is pure relaxation, while Thailand offers more culture and adventure. Just factor in the long flight time.

I totally agree with the Canary Islands suggestion! Gran Canaria, specifically Maspalomas or Meloneras, offers lovely beaches and great food without being too wild. We went in February and it was perfect t-shirt weather every day.

Just a heads up, December and January can be really busy everywhere, especially around Christmas/New Year and school breaks. If you can go in early December or late January/February, you might find better deals and fewer crowds. We made the mistake of going to Cancun over New Year's once... never again!

Have you looked into Cape Verde? It's often overlooked but has beautiful beaches, a really relaxed vibe, and it's quite affordable. Sal or Boa Vista are good islands. It can be windy, which is great for watersports, but still lovely for sunbathing.

Love this idea! We're doing something similar this year. Good luck with your planning!

To piggyback on the Mexico idea, if you go to Riviera Maya, definitely do a day trip to Isla Mujeres. It's a small island, very chill, and the Playa Norte beach is one of the best I've ever seen. Perfect for relaxing and light swimming in incredibly clear water.

For really good value and a unique experience, consider Egypt (Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada). The Red Sea is incredible for snorkeling and diving, and it's very warm. Food can be hit or miss depending on the resort, but you can find some amazing deals. Just do your research on resorts.

While many recommend Florida, especially around Miami/Fort Lauderdale, I found it quite crowded and not always 'good value' during winter. The weather can also be a bit unpredictable, sometimes chilly in January. Just my two cents!

Yes! Cape Verde is a fantastic shout. We went to Sal last February and it was so refreshing. Not touristy in a bad way, just genuinely lovely people and beautiful scenery. Highly recommend if you want to avoid the typical resort chains.

Whatever you decide, book *early*! Especially for December/January. Prices for flights and good accommodation can skyrocket if you leave it too late. Set up price alerts on flight comparison sites.

Instead of one spot, how about a Caribbean cruise? You get to see multiple islands, all your food is sorted, and you're guaranteed warmth. Plus, you can do shore excursions for water activities. Might be good value if you find the right deal, and you avoid the hassle of multiple flights.

Regarding 'not overly crowded' - that's key for unwinding. I'd lean away from places like Phuket in Thailand or mega-resorts in Punta Cana if that's a priority. Look for smaller islands or less developed areas within popular destinations. For example, rather than the busiest parts of the Dominican Republic, maybe Samana.
