My family and I are starting to plan our summer vacation, but we are feeling a bit stuck on where to go. We really want to head somewhere abroad, but we are trying to avoid the typical high-season crowds and prices in Southern Europe. We love a mix of beach time and local culture, and we'd prefer somewhere that isn't too exhausting to travel to with kids. Does anyone have any recommendations for hidden gems or reliable spots that are great in the summer months? Any advice on flight tips or specific regions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you considered Vietnam? Da Nang is fantastic for families, the beaches are beautiful, and it's extremely affordable once you land.

I second the Vietnam suggestion. We went last July and the food alone made it worth the trip, plus the resorts are so cheap compared to Europe.

Is it not incredibly hot in Vietnam during the summer? I’d be worried about the kids melting in that humidity.

Bali is a classic, but stay away from the main tourist hubs like Kuta. Head up to Sanur for a much more relaxed, family-friendly vibe.

I’ve heard great things about Mexico, specifically the Oaxacan coast. Puerto Escondido is way more laid back than Cancun and much lighter on the wallet.

Puerto Escondido is great, but be careful with the waves there if your kids aren't strong swimmers. The currents can be really intense.

Honestly, look into Morocco. Essaouira is a lovely coastal town that doesn't get as stiflingly hot as the interior cities in the summer.

Morocco is a great shout! The medina is such a cool cultural experience for kids, and the flight times from many major hubs aren't too bad.

What about Mauritius? It's winter there during our summer, so the weather is actually perfect-mild and not too humid.

Mauritius is lovely, but isn't the flight super expensive? The user asked for affordable options.

If you are flying from the US, consider Costa Rica. It's the 'green season' so it rains a bit, but everything is discounted and the nature is incredible.

I wouldn't recommend Costa Rica in the summer if you want sun. It pours daily. Maybe stick to the Caribbean side?

Look at Turkey, specifically the Fethiye region. It's technically Eurasia, but it feels very different from Europe and the value for money is unbeatable.

Fethiye is amazing, but it can get quite hot in August. If you go, make sure your accommodation has a good pool for the kids.

Try searching for flights on Skyscanner using the 'Everywhere' feature. Sometimes you find crazy cheap deals to places you hadn't even considered.

Great advice on the 'Everywhere' tool! That's how we ended up in Thailand last year for a fraction of the cost of a trip to Spain.
