I'm finally planning my first trip outside my home country and I'm completely overwhelmed by the choices! I've saved up a bit and I'm looking for a destination that's relatively safe, easy to navigate for a beginner, and offers a good mix of culture, sightseeing, and maybe some relaxation. I'm thinking of a trip lasting about 7-10 days. My budget is moderate, not super luxury but not shoestring either. I'm open to anything from European cities to Asian beaches, but I'd love to hear some personal experiences and recommendations for a memorable first international adventure. What were your first international trips like, and where would you suggest I start?

My first international trip was to Italy, specifically Rome and Florence! It hit all your points: incredible history, delicious food, and surprisingly easy to get around on foot or public transport. I felt very safe there, and 7-10 days is perfect for hitting both cities without feeling rushed. Highly recommend it for a first-timer!

For something completely different, have you considered Thailand? Bangkok is a sensory overload but amazing, and then you can head to the islands like Phuket or Koh Lanta for serious relaxation. It's generally very affordable for a moderate budget, and the people are incredibly friendly. It might feel a bit more adventurous than Europe, but it's very popular with first-time backpackers and tourists alike.

I agree with the London suggestion. It's practically a cheat code for a first international trip if you're an English speaker. No language barrier, fantastic museums (many free!), great food scene, and incredible public transport. Plus, so many iconic sights.

My first big trip was actually to Canada, specifically Vancouver. It's incredibly beautiful with mountains and the ocean, very safe, and extremely easy to navigate. Lots of culture and outdoor activities, plus great food. Might not be as 'exotic' as Europe or Asia, but it's a solid, low-stress first choice.

I always suggest Portugal for first-timers. Lisbon is gorgeous, very walkable (though hilly!), affordable compared to other Western European capitals, and has delicious food and wine. You can also easily do day trips to Sintra or Cascais for more variety and relaxation by the coast.

I'd second the Japan recommendation. Kyoto is absolutely stunning and perfect for culture and relaxation. The bullet train makes getting around so easy, and the people are incredibly polite and helpful, even with a language barrier. It's a bit pricier than Southeast Asia, but definitely doable on a moderate budget if you plan well.

I think the key for a first-timer is somewhere with a well-developed tourist infrastructure. That means good public transport, clear signage (often in English), and plenty of hotels/restaurants used to tourists. All the European cities mentioned fit this perfectly.
